Markel Corporation has hired Nick Lazarus from Hiscox who will take on a role leading U.S. property reinsurance underwriting in London for the re/insurer.
As managing director for North American property reinsurance based in London, Lazarus will lead the existing and established underwriting team based there, while also working closely with colleagues in Bermuda and New Jersey.

During the course of his 12 years of experience in the industry gained at Hiscox, Lazarus has entirely focused on the North American property reinsurance business.
Andrew Barnard, Head of London reinsurance for Markel, commented on the news, “As a top 40 global reinsurer we need a strong, active and visible presence in the London, to support our international positioning and source business from this important market. We have a lot to offer and Nick’s established knowledge and contacts in London will help us make best use of that.”
Lazarus’ knowledge of fronting for ILS funds gained at Hiscox could also prove useful to Markel, as it integrates its own ILS fund managers Nephila Capital and Markel CATCo.
Markel also recently hired a new Executive Underwriting Officer for Global Property, who is to be tasked with working with the firms ILS manager Nephila Capital.
