Hurricane Chris, first of Atlantic season, not expected to trouble land

Share

The first hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic storm season has formed in the middle of the northern Atlantic rather unexpectedly. What was tropical storm Chris, which you could track on our 2012 Atlantic Storm Season page has intensified at an unusually high northern latitude and is now hurricane Chris, the first of this season.

Hurricane Chris is expected to fizzle out in the northern Atlantic, although quite where it will head is as yet uncertain as the storm is expected to loop around and meander south. It could then make a turn towards Europe, head back northwards or even head towards Canada. Wherever it does head it will be as a post-tropical cyclone and weakening is expected so we don’t expect any impact to the re/insurance market.

See hurricane Chris’ forecast path and position below.

It is worth keeping an eye on our Atlantic Hurricane Season page over the next few days though as there is an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf of Mexico which the National Hurricane Center has given a 30% chance of developing into a tropical depression. Some forecasters have said that if conditions are right for development this could intensify to a tropical storm status.
