Daniel Brookman named Head of Capital Markets at Montpelier Re

Bermuda based short-tail and speciality lines reinsurance firm Montpelier Re has named ex-Barclay’s exec Daniel Brookman as Head of Capital Markets and COO of its third-party capital and reinsurance-linked asset manager Blue Capital Management Ltd.

Daniel Brookman’s move from his most recent role as Global Head of Insurance-Linked Structuring at Barclay’s Capital, to Montpelier Re and Blue Capital has been common knowledge in the market since late 2013. Montpelier Re said in its announcement yesterday that Brookman’s appointment is effective immediately.

Brookman will take on the position of Senior Vice President, Head of Capital Markets at Montpelier Re Holdings Ltd., leading the firms push into the capital markets and reinsurance convergence space. The firm’s dedicated third-party reinsurance-linked asset manager Blue Capital will benefit from having Brookman as Chief Operating Officer of the platform.

In his new role Brookman will be responsible for managing capital markets relationships for Montpelier Re, with his initial focus aimed at developing the reinsurers underwriting partnership business. Brookman will report directly to William Pollett, Chief Corporate Development and Strategy Officer for Montpelier.

Brookman has extensive experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry, spanning the capital markets, ILS and convergence space. His most recent role with Barclay’s Capital saw him head up global insurance-linked structuring within the firm’s Global Markets division in New York and London.

Before working at Barclay’s, Brookman held roles in the M&A and Corporate Finance Division of Merrill Lynch International in London and was Head of Alternative Distribution for Benfield Advisory, Inc. in New York, where he was responsible for bringing major hedge funds and pension funds into the reinsurance industry.

The relationships that Brookman has built up over his years in insurance, reinsurance and capital markets will be invaluable to Montpelier Re and Blue Capital, as the group builds out its reinsurance capital management and investments platform. As the ILS and reinsurance capital management space grows in size and stature, relationships, particularly with investors, as well as experience in structuring opportunities are going to be key to reinsurers looking to leverage and manage alternative sources of capital.
