Artemis ILS Asia 2019 – post-conference report

Welcome to the Artemis ILS Asia 2019 post-conference report, in which we review the event and highlight some of the debates that took place on the day during Artemis’ third event in Asia.

Artemis ILS Asia 2019 conferenceOur fourth annual conference in the region was held at Singapore’s Suntec Convention Centre and more than 180 delegates from around the globe converge on the country, to hear insightful discussions on the state of ILS in Asia.

Attendees were treated to a range of keynotes and panel discussions, featuring regional experts in capital markets, reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS), as well as international ILS sector executives who made the trip to Singapore.

Singapore continues to be a leading reinsurance hub for the continent and remains a flourishing capital market centre. Now, Singapore is also home to three ILS transactions, including its first full 144A catastrophe bonds.

The theme of this year’s conference in Singapore was focused on ‘Demystifying ILS’, and featured engaging and insightful discussions from some of the ILS and reinsurance market’s leading figures.

An introduction to the Singapore market and ILS more broadly was followed by a deep dive into 2018’s catastrophe events and how they affected the reinsurance and ILS market.

Then, insight into Singapore’s first catastrophe bond transaction and what ILS has to offer Asian investors was provided by two fascinating panel discussions.

The second half of the day explored return expectations after two heavy loss years, collateralised reinsurance opportunities in Asia, a look at the first Asian reinsurance sidecar transaction and future ILS opportunities in Asia and emerging markets.

Our primary goal for this conference is to provide education on ILS in the Asian region and to facilitate connections by inviting experienced market practitioners to network with local market participants.

Interest in ILS and collateralised forms of reinsurance risk transfer remains strong in Asia, both on the ceding company and as investment opportunities.

This interest is growing and the traction achieved by Singapore has certainly helped to further lift the profile of ILS in the region of Asia and surroundings.

Singapore has cemented a role as an alternative ILS hub, while at the same time the Asian investor community is increasingly interested and learning more about the asset class.

By bringing the transaction closer to this source of investor capital, it is hoped that this education continues apace.

While the clear need for efficient risk transfer capacity in many parts of Asia offers a glimpse into what could be part of the ILS market’s future remit.

Artemis ILS Asia will be back in Singapore in July 2020 for our fifth conference in the region. We hope to see you there!
