Langhorne Re, the joint-venture, third-party capital backed life and annuity reinsurance firm launched by specialist reinsurer and capital manager Renaissance Re (RenRe) and life focused reinsurer Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), has appointed its first senior executives.
Langhorne Re was launched at the start of this year and sees RenRe shifting its third-party reinsurance capital venture model into the life and annuities space for the first time, alongside sector specialist RGA Re. Langhorne Re had $780 million of capital at Feb 1st 2018, with the majority, or $730 million, coming from third-party institutional investors.
The company has named Craig Fowler as the first Chief Executive Officer of Langhorne Reinsurance (Bermuda) Ltd, the Bermuda underwriting platform of Langhorne Re.
Fowler was the Head of Corporate Development at National Life Group in Vermont, where he set up and ran the Institutional Markets business and Capital Management for the organization.
Before National Life, Fowler worked at Transamerica as Treasurer and head of business development for Institutional Markets, as well as being responsible for Transamerica’s Bermuda companies. He is also a founding member of the Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR).
Andrew Markus has been given the roles of Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Langhorne Re and its Bermuda-based subsidiaries.
Markus had consulted to Langhorne at the time of its capital raise and prior to that had been General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Maritime Finance Company, a Bermuda-based finance company working in the maritime industry.
Prior to that, Markus served as Assistant Vice President and Corporate Counsel at RenaissanceRe, where he managed the legal and compliance aspects of RenaissanceRe’s managed joint ventures and strategic investments. Previously, he worked as an associate in the Corporate and Financial Services department of international law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.
