Global reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter has named Tom Hettinger to lead its advisory capabilities in the fields of lead its capital, structured risk, growth and rating agencies across the United States and Canada, hiring him as a Managing Director and Strategic Advisory Leader.
Capital and structured risk advisory are both key areas where the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market is increasingly relevant, as capital advisory requires a truly agnostic view in order to advise on the most efficient forms of capital and capacity to meet a specific need. While structured risk solutions are often an area where ILS specialists would like to focus more.
On the growth side, of course, for many re/insurers the use of third-party capital from institutional investors or ILS funds is seen as a way to grow into challenging markets, where their own capacity is most under pressure. It’s also seen as a way that a traditional re/insurer can generate a new source of fee income from underwriting using third-party capital from investors.
Hettinger was most recently at Arch Reinsurance Company, where he held responsibility for underwriting and developing capital management and predictive modeling solutions for the firm and it’s clients. Before Arch, Hettinger was the Americas Property and Casualty Sales and Practice Leader for Towers Watson, overseeing enterprise risk management, pricing, reserving, and mergers & acquisition efforts.
He was also a founding partner of EMB America, which was acquired by Towers Watson in 2010, and worked with many of Guy Carpenter’s global client through the development of capital management solutions and predictive analytics strategies.
Hettinger will be based in Guy Carpenter’s Chicago office and will report directly to Rob Bentley, head of Global Strategic Advisory at the reinsurance broker.
