AlphaCat appoints Bernard Van der Stichele as portfolio manager

AlphaCat Managers Ltd., the insurance-linked securities (ILS) and third-party reinsurance capital arm of Validus Holdings, has announced the hiring and appointment of experienced ILS executive Bernard Van der Stichele to the role of Portfolio Manager and announced Chris Silvester of Validus will take on responsibility for reinsurance origination.

Van der Stichele was previously a Vice President with asset manager AQR Capital Management, where he worked on reinsurance linked investment strategies, and a Senior Investment Analyst at Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers’, where he helped to create its first direct ILS investment strategy.

In the new role, Van der Stichele will report directly to Lixin Zeng, Chief Executive Officer of AlphaCat.

Zeng commented on the hire; “We are delighted to welcome Bernard to the AlphaCat team. With his impressive track-record and extensive knowledge of insurance-linked securities and reinsurance asset classes, we are confident that he will add tremendous value to AlphaCat.”

Additionally, AlphaCat announced that Chris Silvester, Validus Services’ Executive Vice President and Head of U.S. Property Underwriting, will take on primary responsibility for AlphaCat’s reinsurance business origination, well as his current role as head of Validus Services’ U.S. Property Team.

Silvester will report to Validus Services’ Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer Jeff Clements.
