Aon Hewitt, the talent, retirement and health unit of insurance and reinsurance broker Aon, has hired experienced longevity risk expert Matthew Fletcher to its Risk Settlement Group from Hymans Robertson.
Fletcher joins Aon Hewitt’s Risk Settlement Group as a senior consultant, a role in which he will focus on all issues surrounding longevity risk and the ways to measure and combat it through longevity risk transfer, insurance, reinsurance and longevity swaps.
Martin Bird, senior partner at Aon Hewitt and head of the Risk Settlement Group, commented on the hire; “We are continuing to build our Risk Settlement team as demand for longevity de-risking solutions continues to grow. The combination of low yields, a continued focus on de-risking and the pressures of adapting to the new Solvency II regime means that a deep understanding of longevity risk remains at top of the agenda.
“Matthew Fletcher’s arrival with us is therefore very timely. He brings excellent and very broad technical knowledge as well as extensive client experience, so we are pleased to have brought him to the Aon team.”
In his over 15 years’ experience in the pensions industry, Fletcher has had a focus on longevity risk and how it affects pensions and their liabilities. In his most recent role at Hymans Robertson he was a technical consultant working for its longevity risk focused company Club Vita, overseeing various areas of technical development.
Previously, Fletcher spent 11 years working for Towers Watson in longevity-related and pension scheme actuary roles.
Fletcher is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and a member of the Continuous Mortality Investigation’s (CMI) Projections Committee and of its Self-Administered Pension Schemes Committee, committee’s which investigate UK pension scheme mortality to produce mortality curves that are widely used by schemes and bulk annuity providers across the UK.
Understanding mortality and longevity trends is key to being able to advise or provide pension schemes with longevity risk transfer solutions, this hire bolsters Aon Hewitt’s longevity expertise and ability to do so.
