New York based Stone Ridge Asset Management, the beta, alternative risk and reinsurance focused mutual fund manager, has added a new Head of Legal as it continues to build out its team to support a growing asset base.
In its latest hire, Stone Ridge has hired James Rothwell to the newly created role of Head of Legal this month.
Rothwell was previously a Partner with law firm Davis Polk & Wardell, where he advised on complex structured finance transactions, including equity derivatives and securities offerings of convertible and equity-linked securities.
Stone Ridge Asset Management has grown to a considerable size in a short time, having raised over $3.7 billion of reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) assets under management, as well as assets in its other beta or alternative risk focused strategies.
Senior legal counsel and structuring experience is vital to alternative and mutual fund managers, particularly on the product creation and regulatory side, both areas where Rothwell brings expertise.
Rothwell has been involved in the design and implementation of a number of innovative transaction structures that have become staples of the equity derivatives marketplace and is seen as a leading expert in the structuring field.
Rothwell is also considered a thought-leader on regulatory reform for derivatives businesses and has published on the regulation of Rule 144A offerings, both useful experience for an ILS and reinsurance fund manager, particularly one operating 1940’s Act mutual funds.
