Twelve Capital to strengthen ILS analytics capabilities with Kleinn hire

Zurich, Switzerland based insurance-linked securities (ILS) and reinsurance-linked investment management firm Twelve Capital has announced a new Head of ILS Analytics hire and its intention to further strengthen its ILS analytics and risk modelling capabilities.

In July 2014 Dr. Jan Kleinn, a respected and seasoned expert in the field of catastrophe risk modelling and analysis, joined Twelve Capital’s ILS team as their Head of ILS Analytics. Kleinn has now been tasked with building-out a strengthened ILS analytics capability at Twelve Capital.

Kleinn was Head of Research & Development at reinsurer Aspen Re from 2008 to 2014, where his responsibilities included the evaluation, adjustment and in-house development of catastrophe models as well as natural catastrophe event reporting. Before his time at Aspen Re Kleinn worked for reinsurer PartnerRe’s Research & Development team, developing catastrophe reinsurance risk models for European storms and tropical cyclones.

Kleinn will build up a team of analysts covering both natural and man-made catastrophes at Twelve Capital. The firm says it is convinced that having deep expertise in risk modelling and analytics needs to be a core expertise of ILS managers and that this capability will be one of “the major alpha generators in the future.”

Risk modelling and analytics can be a differentiator for ILS managers and it is becoming increasingly important to have strength in depth in this area. With the proliferation of indemnity transactions and private collateralized ILS and reinsurance deals, the ability to analyse, model and understand risks being invested in is vital. Twelve Capital is clearly positioning itself for further growth with this strengthening of its ILS analytics team.
